My 2-year-old has been banging on this thing every morning before breakfast, and the different tones actually keep her interested longer than I expected. The wood feels solid and the edges are smooth, so I don't worry when she gets a little wild with the mallet.
My two-year-old figured out the rhythm patterns within a day, which surprised me since he usually bangs on everything. The wooden surface has held up fine, though the mallet handle is a bit thick for his small grip.
